Radio Free Frankfort, Inc. is a nonprofit that strengthens and connects our community, supports economic development, promotes mentorship- and stewardship-based education and exposure to technology, sustainability, media and arts.
In October 2013, communities across the U.S. had an unprecedented opportunity. The Local Community Radio Act allowed nonprofits a one-time chance to apply for low power FM radio licenses. Radio Free Frankfort with the help of Woods and Waters Land Trust and the Prometheus Radio Project, is setting up a local radio station for Franklin County.
The biggest thing we need from the community is programming, and we are giving each contributing group, from local musicians to activist organizations, editorial control over their own content. That's as long as the group's content is of good quality and serves the non-profit mission of informing, educating and entertaining Franklin County.
Contributors will post their content via our website, which will automatically run the content on the radio in its specified time slots. For instance, a Bluegrass jam group could record a 30-minute session each week and easily upload it to the website. Not only would it run on the radio, but it would be accessible online at any time.
